This is definitely one to keep on the bedside table, to send you off dreaming of carbonara in Rome, pizza in Naples and spaghetti alla marinara in Sardinia. Clocking in at 352 pages, it’s also a weighty tome, packed with 200 colour photographs portraying the chefs, farmers, fishermen and other figures behind Italy’s culinary traditions, as well as the food, landscapes and cityscapes of Rome, Puglia, Bologna, Sicily, Naples, Sardinia, Piedmont and Lake Como. What does it look like? Roger Sheringham, who apparently appears in other Berkeley novels, has assembled a group of people to help him solve a murder. It’s a great premise for a detective novel. The Germans nearby are looking at me funny because my face is so guffawed as I keep reading this story of unimaginable horror. So this is what I’m reading as I’m rocketing through the air at a height of six miles up. I’ll spare you the extremely gruesome ending to this story, but I urge you to seek it out if you’ve never read it. They die almost immediately from the shock of coming back. ![]() ![]() Upon arrival, their hair turns white from experiencing the infinite, inter-dimensional terror of jaunting awake. All alone with their thoughts in the crushing nothingness, they inevitably go insane. Physical bodies arrive in a mere instant, while a human’s consciousness is trapped for billions of years in a void of endless white. Over the course of the story, we discover that anyone sent through the portal awake suffers through an eternity of waking nothingness. ![]() The first human to jaunt while awake is a test subject - a death-row inmate - who suffers a massive heart attack after emerging, staying alive long enough only to say, “It’s eternity in there…” An eccentric scientist invents teleportation by accident, soon noticing that mice only survive a jaunt if sent through the port unconscious. The father in the story spares his nuclear family the gruesome details of the jaunt-effect, but King fills in the blanks for the reader. ![]() |
